If you're anywhere near Scottsdale, Arizona, this weekend (April 12), don't miss the latest stop on Wines of South Africa's BBQ to Braai tour. New York-based South African chef Hugo Uys will be teaming up with local chefs to create a "South African braai infused with local flavours, perfectly paired with South African wines". Xander Ferreira, a brilliant but hard to classify South African musician and performance artist, will be providing the entertainment. Reviews and pictures of February's stop in New Orleans, which benefited Habitat for Humanity, here. From the BBQ to Braai December 10 press release:
Annette Badenhorst, US Market Manager for WOSA, said: "WOSA established the model of a braai integrated with local BBQ cuisine in summer 2013 to introduce Americans, not only to South African wine, but to South African food and culture, in a way they could easily relate to." Since the first braai in upstate NY in July 2013, "BBQ to Braai" has hit Taste Talks in Brooklyn on 9/15, Austin on 10/27 and Hollywood on 11/3. "We have had tremendous success in the 2013 events with a dynamic Chef, creative multi-media artist, and terrific wines. All of our events have been packed with 300+ attendees, all enjoying the wine, food and music. We are excited for 2014!"In each stop, acclaimed South African Chef Hugo and Xander seek out local chefs, food personalities, farmers and musicians, with the goal of a "cultural" barter between American and South African traditions- replacing the dove and olive tree with a bottle of wine and a "boerewores" roll. The culmination of these exchanges results in a large scale, low-cost, ticketed consumer event featuring South African wine, food from Chef Hugo and entertainment from Xander. All proceeds from each event will benefit a local charity. For the 2014 series, acclaimed Chef Hugo and Xander will continue to travel across the U.S., hosting 10 braai and wine events in collaboration with locally selected chefs, wine specialists, and musicians. At the same time, they will get to know local produce, recipes, flavors, customs and sounds to create a tapestry of the Americana road-trip: South African style. 2014 destinations will include New Orleans, Santa Fe, Portland, Key West and even Hawaii.
