Mrs Busisiwe Thage, spouse to South African Consul General in Shanghai, Mr Thabo Thage, has been elected to serve as President of Consular Spouses Shanghai (CSS). Mrs Thage has been a member of CSS since her arrival in Shanghai in 2013. In 2014 she was elected Deputy President of CSS. A firm believer in philanthropy and always available to represent her country as she travels around the world, she previously served as one of the Executive members of the SADC Women’s Association in Beijing, she also represented South Africa within the Group of African Ambassadors Spouses in Beijing and has served as President of the South African Club Brussels in Belgium. Mrs Thage holds a Masters in Commercial and Corporate Law from the University of London, before moving to China she was Compliance Manager for one of the top four banks in South Africa.
Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, CSS was established in May 1995. It is an association of diplomatic spouses, partners and female consular officers in Shanghai. CSS is a non-profit association whose main objectives are to encourage friendship and understanding between its members, to promote cultural and social exchange amongst its members as well as with our host city, Shanghai and host country, China and to give back to local communities through charity. CSS has done and continues to do excellent work in the promotion of people to people relations between their various countries and the people of China. There are approximately 68 Consulates General in Shanghai and CSS continuously strives to reach out to as many as possible. CSS works closely with the Shanghai Women’s Federation and the Shanghai Foreign Affairs Office, these institutions provide assistance in organising social, cultural and charity events through major institutions such as the Shanghai Charity Foundation and the Shanghai Children’s Foundation. Over the past 20 years CSS has raised and donated about Rmb 6 500 000 to various charitable organisation and projects in and around Shanghai with it’s special focus being on women and children.
Looking into the future as she and the CSS board plan for the year ahead, Mrs Thage sees room to expand the work and focus of CSS. In the year ahead, CSS intends to further strengthen its ties with local partners and extend its reach to more Chinese communities, touching more hearts and changing more lives!
