South Africa took second place for best-organized stall at the first ever China Agricultural University (CAU) Cultural Festival 2015 which took place last Saturday (6 June). A total of 16 countries in CAU coming from different parts of the world took part in this great event.
The 10 DAFF-China CAU students in the university and other students from around Beijing came out in numbers to support the South African brand.
Students took the opportunity to explain what South Africa is all about to the visitors and to give information on its various cultures, which was evident through the variety of dishes that were served. The home cooked dishes showcased and tasted by visitors included: porridge (Pap), spinach, beef stew, braai beef, polony on a stick, chicken strips, potato and egg salad, sugar beans and chakalaka. People also fitted makarapas, learnt to blow the vuvuzela, tasted food and took home mementos to remind them of South Africa in their homes.
On display was also a banner of the late, former South Africa president Nelson Mandela, that attracted people to the stall. One Chinese man took a picture next to the banner and said “Mandela, the President of the World”. It showed how highly South Africa is known and admired by the world.
Branding materials were sourced from South African Embassy, Brand South Africa, Pinotage, African Diamond Wines and China Agricultural University students financial contribution towards food and last but not least, DAFF-China CAU students who made this day a success.
Needless to say, the event was a success with visitors having learned about our beautiful country South Africa.
