Starfish hosted its annual wine tasting event in London this past week. This popular event hosted by Investec in the heart of the City raised more than ever before. Thanks to the sterling efforts of excellent auctioneer Tom Baigrie, guests topped previous totals to raise over £7,000 to support children who have been orphaned or made vulnerable in South Africa.
The event was supported by a range of generous wine suppliers and a very good time was had by all. Master of Wine Nancy Gilchrist hosted a fascinating senses based tasting, followed by a competitive quiz. A tense tiebreak was won by Danny who took home a magnum of Champagne.
Money raised on the night will go toward funding a mobile clinic, the Wellness Wagon. At a cost of just £5.50 per child for a top to toe check-up, and services ranging from immunisations, to testing for HIV, TB and checking for malnutrition, over 1300 children will enjoy better health and wellbeing as a result of the money raised.
In its first year of operation a staggering 67% of children seen needed referral for further care. The wagon is also proving to be an important draw for community health campaign days, particularly relevant in KwaZulu Natal where it is stationed, a province where teenage pregnancies continue to rise and HIV infection rates remain alarmingly high.
