The Future of the Faculty of Health Sciences at UCT
Professor Bongani Mayosi
Dean of Faculty of Health Sciences
Prof Mayosi is a world renowned cardiologist whose work focuses on heart diseases particularly prevalent in developing countries. He has led a groundbreaking series of multinational research studies into the management of pericarditis, and has made a number of contributions to health policy and practice. These include chairing a panel which helped to shape the policy framework on the revitalisation of health research over the past 5 years, and initiating research which has highlighted the central role of syndromic treatment of pharyngitis in children to prevent rheumatic fever, and which is guiding health policy formulation in various countries including Namibia, South Africa and Zambia.
Prof Mayosi has published more than 250 papers in peer-reviewed journals. He has received many awards and honours during his distinguished career, including South African Medical Association/Bonitas Medical Fund merit award for health research (2013); election to the Fellowship of the World Academy of Arts and Science (2013); National Science and Technology Foundation – BHP Billiton award (2012); National Research Foundation award for transforming the Science Cohort in South Africa (2011); and the Order of Mapungubwe, Silver (2009).
Born in Mthatha in the Eastern Cape, Prof Mayosi earned his Bachelor of Medical Science (with Distinction) at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in 1986, followed by his MBChB (with Distinction) in 1989. He was admitted to the Fellowship of the College of Physicians of SA in 1995, and graduated from the University of Oxford with a DPhil in 2003. Prof Mayosi joined UCT in 1992 as senior house officer in the Department of Medicine and has been head of Department of Medicine at Groote Schuur Hospital and UCT since 2006. He was recently inducted into UCT's College of Fellows along with five of his peers, and awarded the A rating by the National Research Foundation in recognition of international leadership in his field of scholarship.
Prof Mayosi is taking up the post of Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at UCT in September, following a sabbatical at Harvard University.
