Cape Town is excitedly anticipating the opening in September 2017 of a major new cultural institution on the V&A Waterfront thanks to a partnership with renowned art collector Jochen Zeitz and his newly established not-for-profit institution, Zeitz MOCAA.
The Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA) will focus on collecting, preserving, researching, and exhibiting cutting edge contemporary art from Africa and its Diaspora.
It will be housed in the historic Grain Silo at the V&A Waterfront and the iconic Zeitz Collection will form the museum’s founding collection.
Built in 1921, and at 57m tall, the Grain Silo remains an icon of the Cape Town skyline. V&A Waterfront, which enjoys over 24 million visitors annually, has committed over R500-million towards the development which will comprise102,000 square feet split over 9 floorsincluding centres for the Costume Institute, photography, curatorial excellence, moving image, performance practice, and art education.
It will feature gallery spaces, a sculpture garden, bookshop, restaurant, technical training areas, research labs and reading rooms.
