Ever heard of the Big Give Christmas Challenge?
It’s the UK’s largest match funding campaign – and South African charity help2read is very excited to have been selected to participate this year! In 2015 this campaign raised over £7.2 million for its charities and is a fantastic opportunity for help2read to raise money and build awareness of their work in South Africa.
In South Africa more than ¼ of Grade 2 learners cannot read a single word and more than 80% of Grade 5 learners have not mastered reading. They will be raising money for their Literacy Tutor programme at the Wemmershoek Primary School based in a small, impoverished farming community in the Western Cape. The funds will be used to train and provide work experience for unemployed literate adults in that community to become literacy tutors to these primary school children who are struggling to master literacy in their primary language, Afrikaans, let alone in English –and to establish reading clubs to foster a love of reading and books.
Donations to this project via theBigGive.org.uk will be matched ( and therefore doubled!) for 72 hours from 12pm on 29th November, namely #GivingTuesday, ending at 12pm on Friday 2nd December.
