The Kings Academy NPC is a Public Benefit Organisation (PBO) that was set up to develop and support young athletes on the rugby field in the Eastern Cape and Border – but with a firm emphasis on furthering their education, in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, in a vocation that is appropriate to each individual thus ensuring a clear path and direction once their professional rugby career has come to an end. The Academy is a completely independent entity and as such has the capacity to engage with sponsors and donors, inclusive of naming rights, apparel branding etc. They deliver a development program under the 6-pillar model, typically over a 5 year cycle (from Under 16’s to under 21’s) to enhance each selected rugby player.
Since the inception of the Academy in October 2011 they have managed to produce 53 full time professional rugby players, of which more than 50% are players of colour. It has taken both the U19 and U21 Currie Cup teams from the 1st division into the Premier A competition, culminating in the U19 Currie Cup team been crowned as Champions in 2015.
