Celebrate South Africa
Every year on 24 September, South Africans everywhere, pause to celebrate their culture and the diversity of their beliefs and traditions as one people.
Historically, the day was known as Shaka Day, in commemoration of the presumed date of the death of Shaka, the Zulu king. Building on the legacy of Shaka’s feat in uniting the Zulu clans into a cohesive nation, in 1996 the newly democratic South African Parliament and the ANC reached renamed the day Heritage day as a day to celebrate the unity of the diverse people of South Africa. It is the day to celebrate the contribution of all South Africans to the building of South Africa.
This Heritage Month, Brand South Africa features a selection of national cultural and heritage icons who are embodiment and global ambassadors of to South African culture and heritage in Fashion, Art, Music and Entertainment (FAME) to inspire other South Africans everywhere to celebrate our heritage and culture.
To close the heritage month, let’s wear South Africa with Laduma Ngxokolo’s #MaxhosaAfrica, paint South Africa with Dr. Esther Mahlangu’s Ndebele art, dance South Africa with Makhadzi’s “Murahu” and “Matorokisi” and act South Africa with Dr. John Kani’s “Black Panther,” “Captain America Civil War” and “Lion King” – the South African way.
