MOYA’s acrobatic exhibition, which creates a picture right before your eyes, examines and celebrates tradition and culture in a way that is distinctly South African.
The artists reveal themselves to the audience by sharing their stories of escape, encounter, brotherhood, and Ubuntu. These stories take place in the comfortable and familiar setting of a fruit market, where the merchant juggles his apples, or in the dark and windy streets of Cape Town, where pedestrians bustle and tumble, maybe even including a young woman who flies away on the sheets of her washing line. Everything is conceivable and reality is pliable.
Nelson Mandela’s Rainbow Nation, the realization of a hope that all South Africans, a country with eleven official languages and a varied population, may unite and build a future of peaceful coexistence and harmony, serves as the backdrop for this distinctly South African performance.
A group of 10 vibrant and youthful performers, called MOYA, will take you on a multicolored trip through the Zip Zap Circus, a miniature version of South Africa. Engaging native rhythms and acrobatic flair, the program embodies the tangible African spirit of “vuma,” or passion, joy, and perseverance.
Directed by a group of artists, MOYA began as an acrobatic art film and was later developed into a narrative circus show.
