The Drakensberg Boys Choir School is the leading choir school in Africa, based in the Drakensberg Mountain Valley in South Africa. The choir travels and performs internationally across Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas. During its history, the choir has performed for Heads of State and for the Pope. The boys’ choir performs a repertoire spanning across European classical music, contemporary popular music and traditional African song and dance. The boys’ choir is excited to be performing in Mauritius for the first time.

Since its establishment, the Drakensberg Boys Choir School has seen many different conductors and produced a number of successful musicians among the boys who have passed through its doors. The school consists of approximately eighty boys, from Grade 4 to Grade 9, who have been selected through auditions held across South Africa. Each day, the boys have a full range of academic lessons and various Music subjects, in addition to two hours of choir rehearsals.

The choir performs an average of eighty concerts per year, which include weekly Wednesday concerts and some Saturday concerts held on the school premises during term time. The choir tours regularly, both nationally and internationally. The countries they have visited include Austria, Botswana, Canada, Egypt, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kenya, Namibia, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey, The United Kingdom, the United States of America, Vatican City, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

One of the highlights from the choir’s history was an invitation from Pope John Paul II to perform in St. Peter’s Square in 1983. The choir was the first South African cultural group to perform behind the Iron Curtain in 1985, and were also invited to perform at a congress of the American Choral Directors’ Association in 2007. The choir also performed for the first president of the democratic South Africa, Mr. Nelson Mandela.

The Drakensberg Boys Choir is delighted to be traveling and performing for international audiences once again. In particular, the choir is excited to experience the rich heritage and cultural diversity of Mauritius, the pearl of the Indian Ocean.
