Limpopo Boy’s Rise to Global Fame

Youth Month Spotlight: Limpopo Boy’s Rise to Global Fame

As we commemorate Youth Month in South Africa, we shine the spotlight on an exceptional young talent from Limpopo, Matome Robert Mahlatse Thoka, better known by his stage name Limpopo Boy.

Born in a small village called Botlokwa in Polokwane, Limpopo, Limpopo Boy’s journey to stardom began at a tender age. He started dancing in his school’s cultural group and later joined a local dance crew, honing his skills and perfecting his craft.

With a passion that couldn’t be contained, Limpopo Boy followed his dreams and made a move to Pretoria, where he founded his own company that uses dance to transform the lives of young people. But his journey wasn’t without its humble beginnings. He used to dance outside the State Theatre and various clubs in Pretoria, where people would throw money into a basket in appreciation of his performances.

His humble beginnings as a backup dancer for artists such as Dr Malinga, Lady Zamar, and Soweto’s Finest laid the foundation for his future success. Limpopo Boy’s big break came when he started dancing for Makhadzi, one of South Africa’s most popular artists, for over six years. This exposure helped him refine his skills and develop his unique style, which blends traditional South African dance with contemporary flair.

In 2023, Limpopo Boy achieved a remarkable milestone by claiming the top spot at the prestigious Brussels Dance Battle in Belgium. He competed in various categories, including hip-hop, house, krump, and ksaara, showcasing his versatility and talent.

Following his European success, Limpopo Boy embarked on his 5th World Dance Tour in May this year, performing in various countries in Asia, including China, Hong Kong, Japan, Indonesia, Thailand, Taiwan, and Singapore. His unique style and energy captivated audiences across the continent, solidifying his status as a global dance sensation.

Shortly after his Asian tour, Limpopo Boy took the stage in London in early June and later in Scotland on 8 June this year, showcasing his talents to a new wave of fans. His international performances have not only made him a household name but also served as witness to his dedication to his craft.

Today, Limpopo Boy is a world-renowned dancer and choreographer, inspiring young people everywhere to chase their dreams and pursue their passions. As a global South African, he embodies the spirit of unity and diversity that defines our beautiful rainbow nation. We honour the youth of 1976 for their courage which has made it possible for young talents like Limpopo Boy and many other global South Africans in various fields to shine on the global stage. Their fight against apartheid and struggle for equality and freedom created a platform for future generations to excel and make a mark on the world. Happy Youth Month, South Africa!
