Howzit from chilly London!
24 Christmases in the UK, and still nothing compares to a South African December. Right now, Verona and I are counting down the days. Our boys are packing for poolside days while their London friends bundle up for winter.
You should see us explaining to colleagues why we’re heading to scorching heat for Christmas. They don’t get it – how could they? They’ve never tasted summer mangoes by the pool, or felt that afternoon thunderstorm cool down a sweltering day. Never experienced a Christmas braai or watched kids running through sprinklers on Christmas morning.
The pound’s strong, yes. But we’re not coming for that. We’re coming for family picnics in lush parks, summer braais’, for those precious moments when our British boys discover another piece of their heritage.
We are coming home, for that first bite of Durban bunny chow, or our traditional farewell dinner at Ocean Basket in OR Tambo.
Because home is where “Howzit” is, especially in December.
See you soon,
Kugan
